Description
- Francesco Battaglioli
- A capriccio view of a walled town with elegant figures on the river
- oil on canvas
Provenance
In the collection of the family of the present owner for at least four generations.
Condition
The painting is greener in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has been relined, and though the paint surface is a little sunken it retains its detail and colours. The paint surface is a little dirty and is under a slightly yellowed and uneven varnish. Retouchings to an old damage of approximately 3 by 5cm. in the centre of the upper margin have become a little discoloured, but no major damages to the work are apparent. Inspection under UV light confirms these retouchings and reveals a small number of old scattered retouchings to the sea and sky. Further retouchings may be masked by the aforementioned reflective varnish. Offered in a gilt wood frame in fair condition.

Catalogue Note
This capriccio was almost certainly executed during Battaglioli's sojourn in Madrid, where he was in the employ of King Ferdinand VI from 1754 to 1760. The following three lots, all of the same dimensions as the present painting, would seem to have been painted by Battaglioli's principal follower in Spain as part of a set to match the present work.
