Condition

The catalogue illustration is too blue in tone. The canvas has an old relining which is still sound. The paint surface is now very dirty and the varnish layer discoloured. There are a number of old repaired damages: a 5 x 8 cm repair in the lower sky, a 15 x 5 L-shaped old tear across the topmost pennant on the left, a small 6 cm vertical tear or scrape in the right sky,a small damage or loss of 2 x 2 cm on the sides of the left hand ship, and a 5 cm, vertical tear with smaller surrounding losses in the centre foreground. The great majority of the paint surface remains in very good state, with some retouching to minor areas of wear in the parts of the sky. The figures on board the fishing boat have been repainted. Offered with a later gilt wood frame in the French style, a few minor chips.
