Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative for the actual painting...*** The canvas has a rigid relining, which has flattened the paint surface a bit. The paint surface is slightly abraded to the background in the sky, but otherwise seems to be in very good condition. No damages seem to be apparent. The painting is covered with a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals very tiny retouchings in the sky along the right edge, and some minimal strengthening in the sheep, in the cow's horns, and in the sleeping shepherd. Offered in a decorative gilt wood frame with tiny holes and a few losses, in fair condition. (MW)

Catalogue Note

In the 1650s and '60s, Adriaen van de Velde was strongly influenced by the work of Paulus Potter. In this painting for example, the imposing cow clearly resembles depictions of oxes from Potter's Bullenboekje (Bull's book) a series of prints of individual cows and bulls that was published in 1650. Van de Velde's low horizon allowed him to fully explore the atmospheric quality of the soft blue hues of the sky.
