Condition

Unlined, canvas buckles upper right corner, craquelure throughout, stretcher bar marks visible, one inch tear lower left corner; under UV: inch spot of inpainting along lower left edge to address loss, three spots of inpainting in woman's white gown to address loss, area of inpainting at center blossom in woman's orange gown, other spots of inpainting in woman's gown, inpainting at hem of gown, spots of inpainting at bottom of man's pants, some other scattered spots of inpainting.

Catalogue Note

The present work's pendant Hommage à la Bijouterie française sold in these rooms, May 26, 1993, lot 72.  According to the Gervais family, the two pictures hung in the artist's parents' shop in Toulouse at the end of the century.  LIke Bijouterie the present work may be an allegory from Gounod's opera Faust (1859).  This popular opera was preformed frequently both in the Paris Opéra and the Opéra du Capitol in Toulouse.
