Catalogue Note

Edouard Cortes has chosen the intersection of the Place de la République with its broad boulevard divided by a line of trees and Rue du Temple that enters from the right to present a vista in front of the grand magasin Au Pauvre Jacques that beckons the crowded streets with its gaily lit interiors.  The famous statue of the French Republic is just outside the boundary of the picture to the left. Beyond the right edge is the entrance to Rue Béranger.
