  • Collection of seven autograph letters and postcards, signed ("Paul Celan"; "Paul"), in German and French, unpublished
  • paper and ink
comprising: two autograph letters, signed ("Paul Celan"), to his Austrian host Lilly von Sauter; an autograph postcard, signed ("...Ihr Paul"), to the author and lyric poet Dr. Max Hölzer ("das Stille und Herzliche der Freundschaft!..."); two autograph letters, signed ("Paul Celan"), and one autograph postcard, signed jointly by Celan and his wife Gisèle ("Paul Gisèle"), to Professor Claude David; and one autograph letter offering condolences to Claude David and his wife, signed jointly by Celan and his wife ("Gisèle...Paul Celan"); in the letters Celan mentions Nietzsche, who, he says, may be praised for wanting to shoot all anti-semites, describes in poetic terms his infant son ("ein Siebenmonatskind und Augenwesen, das im Juni des vergangenen Jahres zu uns und zu sich kam...), sends atmospheric holiday greetings from Chaumont, refers to his translation work and his search for a summer house, regrets having giving up his position at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, discusses humorously his teeth and other matters, 12 pages, various sizes, one autograph envelope inscribed by Celan with his name and address, Geneva, Moisville, Paris and elsewhere, 18 March [19]56 to 29 August 1966, some light creasing and browning; together with a visiting card signed and inscribed by Celan ("...mit allen guten Wünschen Paul Celan Januar 64"), and a slightly faded colour photograph, c.1967, showing the Celan family (and unidentified guest) at their holiday home at Moisville (10)



...entschuldigen Sie bitte, daß ich Ihren Brief erst heute beantworte: ich war, als er kam, "hauptberuflich" mit...meinen Zähnen beschäftigt - ou plutôt c'était mon dentiste qui s'occupait, alors qu'il m'avait condamné à la passivité, de mon mordant (que je n'obstinait à ne pas perdre)...Nun, das ist zwar, bei all meiner diesbezüglichen Passivität, keineswegs passé, aber ich konnte, allem zahnärztlichen Unken zum trotz, doch noch einiges retten - vor allem das, was der - mehr oder minder - gesammelte Thomas Thomas und der dahinter winkende gute Friedrich Nietzsche - dem man getrost nachrühmen darf, daß er alle Antisemiten erschießen wollte - mir abverlangte an - nein, nicht an Bissigkeit, sondern an mimetischer Kaustizität (und selbstverständlich nicht nur an dem)...
