Catalogue Note

Francesco Tamagno (1850-1905), the great heroic tenor who created the role of Otello in 1887, visited Verdi at the spa Montecatini Terme in July 1898, and the two men are here shown reunited on the steps of the Locanda Maggiore.  The photographer was the renowned Pietro Tempestini of La Spezia, who made several photographs of Verdi at Montecatini. Some were published  in articles by C. Paladini in 1896 & 1899: see M Conati, Encounters with Verdi (1984), pp.322-323.  This famous image in particular has been reproduced many times, but the present example appears to be an early or even original print, with the details very sharp, a deluxe issue with the mount printed and edged in silver.
