Catalogue Note
Musical quotations by Ravel are now quite uncommon at auction. Ravel's first violin sonata, notable for its rhythmic and metrical adventurousness, dates from 1897, but remained unpublished until 1975. Arbie Orenstein states that the first performance took place only in 1975, but Ravel makes clear here that the piece was performed in its as yet uncompleted state in 1929, probably by Oberdorfer himself.
