Catalogue Note
A good collection of early Mozart librettos, including the curiously bowdlerized revision of the libretto for Die Zauberflöte carried out for Goethe by his future brother-in-law Christian August Vulpius, a version of the Singspiel which was premiered in Weimar, with Goethe's staging, on 16 January 1794. A notable spin-off from Goethe's involvement with the opera was his own unfinished sequel Der Zauberflöte Zweiter Teil, on which he worked intermittently between 1794-1795 and around 1800. A further libretto concocted by Vulpius is that for Theatralische Abenteuer, a pasticcio based on Mozart's Der Schauspieldirektor, K.486, and Cimarosa's L'Impresario in angustie.
