first edition of the libretto of The Magic Flute, 107 pages, 8vo (14.5 x 9cm), 2 engraved plates by Alberti, showing a temple (frontispiece) and Papageno, the second plate with contemporary hand-colouring, nineteenth-century marbled boards, lacking last page (supplied in contemporary manuscript), frontispiece illustration detached and tipped in, title-page detached and laid down with some tears and loss elsewhere, with several old repairs, staining consistent with use [Fuld, Librettos, p.347; Hirsch, iv 1385; not in Sonneck]

Extremely rare. Aside from the copy of the libretto sold in these rooms on 5 December 1997 (lot 143) we have traced no other for Mozart's last Singspiel at auction in recent times
