Catalogue Note
Hasse's Marian antiphon Regina Coeli was one of a number of works which survived the general desuetude in to which the composer's output unjustly sank after his death, a number of his sacred works, being cultivated, for example, by the Viennese Hofkapelle in to the nineteenth century (TNG). The time and place of the work's composition are unknown, although the work was presumably written for use at Dresden. Both score and parts here transmit a later version of the work in which the original high horn parts are replaced by trumpets and timpani, and which contains a middle movement for four voices, including bass solo (the earlier version of the work contained a movement for altosolo). Hasse's autograph manuscript of a later version of the work, also with bass solo in the second movement, was sold in these rooms on 6 December 1996 (lot 110).
