Description

  • Eighteenth-century scribal manuscript parts for the oratorio Sanctus Petrus et Sancta Maria Magdalena, some in the hand of J.A. Hiller
  • Music manuscript
comprising parts for SSSAA, vn I (2), violin II (2), va, b, fl I and II, ob I and II, bn, horn I and II, written in brown ink on up to 17 single-stave systems per page by at least four scribes, one being Johann Adam Hiller, including some additional or replacement parts for some numbers, containing some cancellations, around 190 pages in all (c.27 pages in Hiller's hand), plus blanks, various sizes, mostly 4to (c.36 x 21.7cm), some scribal parts inscribed (by Hiller?) apparently with singers' names, ("Henze...Müller...Döring..."), a strip of music paper containing the horn II part for the Introduzione in Hiller's hand also containing some unidentified music (the viola part of a symphony?) in an unidentfied hand, a horn II part in Hiller's hand for one aria also containing in Hiller's hand the first fifteen bars of a bassoon part for the first movement of an unidentifed symphony, old wrapper with manuscript number and inscription ("236...Magdalena"), no place or date [Leipzig, last quarter of the C18th?]

Catalogue Note

Hasse's oratorio Sanctus Petrus et Sancta Maria Magdalena (Saint Peter and Saint Mary Magdalene), in which the passion story is reflected upon by the two title characters, with roles also for Mary, mother of James, Salome and Joseph of Arimathea, was written for the ladies of the Venice Incurabili in1758, during one of the composer's stays in that city.
