Catalogue Note

Manuel Garcia (1775-1832), was the Spanish composer and tenor, most famous for creating the role of Count Almaviva in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia in 1816.  He wrote many operas for Madrid, Paris, New York and Mexico, but this is only one of two composed for Naples (the Teatro del Fondo, the royal opera house for performances of comic operas), in 1813.  The are two recorded contemporary manuscripts of this opera, in Paris and Naples, from which a modern edition was made in 2008, without reference to the present copy.   Garcia was also the father of the two famous mezzo-sopranos Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot.
