Catalogue Note

A fine association copy of one of Hugo's early published works, written when he was just eighteen. It was republished later in the same year together with his Ode sur la naissance de... le duc de Bordeaux, who was born seven months after the death of his father the Duc de Berry. This volume also provides evidence of the authorship of Jean-Louis Brad's Elégie sur la mort, which was published anonymously. The autograph presentation verse addressed to the Duchesse de Berry is signed by Brad.
