Catalogue Note

The third Madrid edition of part one of Don Quixote (Part II was not published until 1615) and the last to be corrected by the author. On its first publication in 1605, Don Quixote was an immediate success, resulting in the proliferation of editions by various publishers, as the original publisher failed to register the copyright outside his native Castile. Although scholars have not agreed on the extent of Cervantes' involvement in the1608 edition, it is widely acknowledged that this edition contains important revisions made by the author and is essential to the establishment of a definitive critical edition.
