Catalogue Note

This is a working manuscript of a number from one of Schnittke's most important works, his ballet Peer Gynt, first performed, with choreography by John Neumeier, at Hamburg, 22 January 1989.

Anitra's Dance was a later composition inserted after fig. 61 in the Hamburg production (into the "Film Sequence" in Akt II, no. 23). Composed by Schnittke in half a day, it had been required on account of a stipulation in the contract of the solo dancer Chantal Lefèvre with the Hamburg Ballet which guaranteed her a major solo number. The manuscript draft for it is of great interest, diverging as it does significantly from the final version. The draft contains the music of the final version up to fig. C and from fig. E onwards, and includes 11 bars of music which are not to be found in the finished score of the dance. The chords which follow the end of piece appear to be a working out of the string chords at fig. D of the final version. See lot 159.
