First edition of these essays on the author's improvements to the design of the dioptric lens, first invented by Augustin Fresnel in 1822. Stevenson was a renowned lighthouse engineer and responsible for the construction of a dozen lighthouses, the most famous of which is at Skerryvore in the Inner Hebrides.
