  • PAPER
notated in pencil on systems of varying length, with some autograph corrections and cancellations, with contemporary autograph title and date ("Geburtstagsstück für Wanek 11/11/89") and later autograph signature and inscription ("Hans Werner Henze Marino, Roma 17/6/1990 1. Skizze zu einem Geburtstagswalzer für den Komponisten Friedrich Wanek..."), 1 page, 20.3 x 50cm, cut down from a larger leaf, no place, 11 November 1989, central fold; together with an autograph letter signed ("Hans Werner Henze") to an acquaintance ("Liebe Frau Petra"), discussing the planning of a new opera with a text by Auden, noting that Der Prinz von Homburg will be performed on 22 May in Hamburg, mentioning a new orchestral work of his that will be conducted by Karajan in Salzburg, and asking her to take his brother under her wing, 2 pages, 4to, Naples, 4 January 1960, small tears to corners, one repaired with translucent adhesive tape (2)

Catalogue Note

A visually dramatic sketch for an as yet unpublished piano work (a 'birthday waltz') written for the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of the Rumanian-born composer Friedrich K. Wanek (on 11 November 1989). On the death of the latter in 1991 Henze wrote his Zwei Konzertarien for tenor and small orchestra.
