Catalogue Note

Rare:  whilst songs and sketches by Donizetti are sometimes found at auction, complete autograph manuscripts of operatic arias are seldom offered for sale.  Donizetti was the leading composer of Italian comic opera after Rossini left Italy for Paris in 1823.  This seems to be a complete bi-partite aria, probably written for insertion into a pre-existing comic opera (dramma giocoso), almost certainly written in Naples during the mid to late 1820s.  The relatively modest orchestral forces suggest it was written for a small theatre such as the Teatro Nuovo rather than a royal theatre.
