Catalogue Note

Bernstein's three-movement Piano Trio dates from the composer's time at Harvard as a student of Walter Piston, some eight years before his first great success in 1944 with the musical On the Town (which re-uses the opening of the trio's second movement). For long overlooked - and unpublished in the composer's lifetime - the trio is an ambitious, even prophetic, work from the pen of the young composer.
