  • 57 BY 33 CM.; 22 1/4 BY 13 IN.

Condition

The painting is in good condition, as is the canvas, which is clear and taut. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a few tiny specks of retouching on the figure's face, which are visible only under UV light. The paint layers are intact. The colour of the actual painting is more pink-toned and warmer in reality than in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

"After he had postponed his departure a few times he returned to Holland with mixed feelings. 'My Javanese adventure went quite well', he wrote in The Hague in December 1922. 'I did a lot of work there and know now what a land of eternal summer is like. I am very glad that I have been there and perhaps I would have done better to stay. However there is something mysterious in the atmosphere of that country, something which one cannot recall once one has left. I do know that I was sure that I wanted to leave, that I was content to go on board, that friends there envied me because I was leaving, yet I ask myself why?' "
