Catalogue Note

The present work is a study for a mosaic which Chagall was commissioned to create for the courtyard of a family home. The monumental mosaic was the main feature of 'La Cour Chagall' (fig. 1), accompanied by the sculptures Oiseau and Poisson. The mosaic and the sculptures have since been donated to the Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny, where the 'Chagall Courtyard' has been recreated. With its colourful and playful imagery dominated by birds and foliage, the present study offers a glimpse of the arcadian atmosphere that Chagall created for an urban setting.
