Mathématicien né à Mulhouse, Joseph Heinrich Lambert (1728-1777) était autodidacte. Le roi Frédéric II le distingua en le nommant à l'Académie de Berlin en 1764. Son traité de photométrie rend hommage à ses devanciers, Bouguer et Euler. Il est d'un grand intérêt dans l'histoire de l'optique du fait de ses applications, notamment en astronomie. 
Ouvrage peu commun : les deux seuls exemplaires répertoriés au NUC sont ceux de Harvard et de Stanford (Collection Barchas). Bon exemplaire.
