Le premier roman de Jean Cocteau livre la plupart des thèmes de l'œuvre à venir. L'éducation sentimentale de Jacques Forestier, jeune bourgeois parisien, transpose sa liaison avec l'actrice Madeleine Carlier. Gide n'en croit pas un mot. Paul Valéry est plus perspicace : "Ce n'est pas un roman. Ce dont je vous félicite. C'est vous. Ce que je préfère."
