Second roman de Louÿs après Aphrodite, La Femme et le pantin s'inspire des mémoires de Casanova qu'il retranscrit à l'époque contemporaine. S'il n'atteint pas la liberté de ton de Trois filles de leur mère, il s'incrit dans la même mouvance décadente de la fin du XIXe siècle.
