Après plus de 250 ans d'administration par les Chevaliers de Saint-Jean, Malte est conquise en 1798 par Bonaparte en route vers l'Egypte. Cette publication historique en français, destinée aux nouveaux administrateurs, est l'oeuvre d'Onorato Bres, citoyen de Malte, qui publiera un second ouvrage, Malta antiqua illustrata, dédié au Roi d'Angleterre.
