Catalogue Note

Juanita entre las flores is a fantastic example of Ramos Martinez' mature period. Very much a product of their time, works from Ramos Martinez's California period have a nostalgia for a forgotten paradise, depicted in Art Moderne forms of the 1930's.  In California, Ramos Martinez' work changed from a more Spanish influenced mode of painting to one inspired by Mexican themes. Like many of the Latin American artists of the period, especially those in Mexico such as Diego Rivera, he began to populate his work with indigenous themes. These paintings are filled with static figures like classical friezes against bountiful tropical landscapes laden with fruit and flowers. Their colors are jewel like, sparkling under the Mediterranean light of southern California.
