Catalogue Note
A prince is seen visiting his harem in an opulent palace courtyard. The ladies are shown swooning under the effect of his grand presence while winged fairies gaze upon the scene from above.
The picturization of large-scale, elaborately appointed palace interiors with gardens was a hallmark of later Mughal workshops. For other paintings featuring courtly figures within similarly lavish interior settings, see Barbara Schmitz (ed.), After the Great Mughals, Marg Publications, Mumbai, 2002, nos. 10 &11, pp. 25-27.
