Catalogue Note

The figure's powerfully modeled torso with the dhoti secured at the waist with a simple sash and firmly rooted frontal stance are closely related to Mathura sculpture of the second and third century.

Compare the modeling with a relief featuring the animal-headed deity Naigamesha in P. Pal, Indian Sculpture, vol. I, Los Angeles, 1986, cat. S66, p. 189 and with a sculpture of Shiva, ibid., cat. S76, p. 199.
