Condition

In very good condition. On buff-colored wove paper, the sheet is slightly time-darkened. Some of the ink is very slightly faded. The right edge of the sheet is uneven and indicates having been trimmed, after being removed from a spiral-bound notebook. A few faint fox marks are visible mainly in the middle of the sheet in between the figures and just above her outstretched arm. Two small water stains are visible near the lower right corner. The sheet is mounted at the top two corners with archival hinges to an acid free mount. On verso, there are some faint fox marks scattered throughout. Some minor abrasion to the fibers of the sheet are visible at upper right but this does not go through to the front of the sheet, probably from a previous tape hinge. Some traces of pigment visible, likely from the studio. Otherwise in good condition

Catalogue Note

In the 1960's, Picasso returned again and again to the subject of the painter and model. While there are many variations on the theme, whether it be lovers or musicians, the fundamental premise of the overt sexual tension remains constant. In Homme et femme assis, as in so many of Picasso's later works, Picasso seems determined to perpetuate his erotic expression through art. The artist said "Art can only be erotic [...] Art can't be chaste. One ought to forbid it to ignorant innocents and never put anyone in contact with it who is  insufficiently prepared for it. Yes, art is dangerous. Or if it is chaste, it's not art."
