Catalogue Note

Kisling met the sitter, Ambassadress Açuçena Borges da Fonseca and her husband, Ambassador Borges da Fonseca, when he was staying at the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, D.C. He was struck by the beauty of the diplomat's wife and painted her portrait. The sitter befriended other artists such as de Chirico and Léonor Fini who also painted her portrait.
