Condition

Executed on cream wove paper laid down on board, presumably by the artist. Some minor surface dirt at the extreme edges, particularly at centre of top edge. There appears to be a possible pinhead sized repair to the right of the sitter's nose to which gouache has been applied. This may or may not be by the artist. Colours are slightly faded. This work is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Executed in Zurich, Portrait de Jeune femme was given by Foujita as a token of friendship and admiration to Professor Rossier. As one of his closest doctors, such gift emphasises the sentiment Foujita refers to on the reverse of the drawing: his "impossibility to express my recognition in words". Imbued in the sentence is the artist's powerful announcement of which the work is testament.
