Condition

The canvas is lined. There are extensive retouchings throughout the paint surface, the great majority of which appear to be excessive, and should they be removed could be considerably reduced. There have however been a number of vertical and horizontal fracture lines and folds with associated necessary retouching. There is an overall light craquelure pattern but the work is in stable and secure condition. Colours: Fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, although the colours are brighter and more luminous and the figure's face is less red in the original.

Catalogue Note

John Rewald records that Cézanne's son and the critic Georges Riviére believed the present work to be a self-portrait of the artist. Subsequently this  has been questioned and it is not possible to posit that the present work does indeed represent a portrait of Paul Cézanne.
