Catalogue Note

Edjuli Dinshaw, born in Mumbai in 1916, set up one of the more well-known World War II-era ateliers in New York City at 1080 Fifth Avenue, the home he shared with his sister, Bachoo. A well-respected interior decorater and collector, he had a flair for the exotic; he decorated his opulent home with furniture once owned by Marie Antoinette and was known to wear silk slippers embroidered with emeralds. In Pavel Tchelitchew, Edjuli Dinshaw found a fellow lover of luxury and exoticism, as this intimate portrait indicates. A full-length portrait of a reclining Edjuli, dated 1940 and offered at auction in 2009, testifies to Edjuli and Pavel's long friendship.
