Sijs was born in Gand (Gent, Belgium) and went to Gand Academy where he met the De Smet brothers. With them he initiated the Brussels art club Les Independants.

In 1905 he went to St Martens Latem, a village where the De Smets, Frits van den Berghe, De Sadeleer, Minne and Van de Woestyne had taken up residence. From 1907 onwards he travelled throughout Belgium, France and The Netherlands in search of motifs to paint.
