Description

  • A YELLOW GOLD AND ENAMEL QUARTER REPEATING A TOC WATCHCIRCA 1790
  • Gold, enamel
  • diameter 53 mm
-- cylinder escapement, oversized striking hammers repeating on gong to the side of the case and activated by depressing the pendant -- engraved cuvette -- white enamel dial, Arabic numerals -- case back with translucent green enamel over engine-turned ground, polychrome enamel plaque to the centre depicting a Russian family crest, blue and white bands to the bezels with gilt leaf design -- dial and cuvette signed Gregson Horloger du Roy a Paris, No 1915

Condition

The cylinder movement is running at the time of cataloguing and the repeating a toc mechanism is repeating correctly. There is a hairline crack to the dial at the centre by the hands. There is restoration to the enamel to the bezels and the plaque to the centre of the case back, the translucent green enamel is scuffed but overall is in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The movement of this watch is identical to that of most of the repeating watches by Jean Antoine Lepine towards the end of his career.
The coat of arms depicted on the enamel plaque belonged to the Count of Levashov. He governed Estonia, Curland and Russia during the 19th Century.
