Description
- A SMALL AND RARE 18K PINK GOLD MUSICAL OPEN-FACED WATCH AND A GOLD MUSICAL FOB SEALCIRCA 1800
- Pink gold
- diameter of watch 42 mm, height of fob 46 mm
• two train gilt cylinder movement, pin barrel music activated by a slide in the band, gilt-metal cuvette • engine-turned gold dial, with eccentric matte chapter ring at 6 o'clock, Roman numerals • engine-turned case • together with a pink gold and ruby-set musical fob seal with chased floral decoration and engraved inscription • unsigned (2 pieces)
Condition
Watch: The balance oscillates when wound and the musical train operates when wound, but only for a brief period and the movement will need an overhaul. There are light scratches to the dial and loss of finish to the hands. The engine-turning decoration to the case is very well preserved. The engraving to the cuvette reads, 'AD' (after market and somewhat crude) as well as designations for Montrel, Aiguilles and Musique (original). The case is numbered 1873.
With two keys.
Inscription is Horatio Nelson to Lady Hamilton, trying to verify
Musical Fob: The movement is heavily rusted and does not operate whatsoever. The movement would need a complete overhaul and extensive restoration to be operable (possibly would need replaced parts due to rust corrosion). There is damage to the gilt cover. The engraved inscription reads, Horatio Nelson to Lady Hamilton. Horatio Nelson and Lady Hamilton had a well-documented affair that became of the biggest scandals of the era and has been the subject of numerous books and articles.
