  • A TORTOISESHELL AND ENAMEL SINGING BIRD BOX CIRCA 1850
  • Tortoiseshell, bird feathers
  • length 95 mm
• with oval panel enameled with a Swiss mountain scene inhabited by a chalet, the underside polychrome enameled with flowers brightly feathered bird rising from a gilt-metal and engraved reserve, the bird flapping its wings, moving its beak, head, body and tail • the bird  playing four tunes in sequence • tortoishell rectangular case, back fitted with hinged key compartment • movement numbered 674

Condition

The bird moves and sings when the slide in the case is activated, but the movement is in need of a service. The brass plates are tarnished and in need of a cleaning. The tortoiseshell box has numerous scratches, a couple hairline cracks and chips. There are no visible repairs to the enamel scene on the oval lid. The bird is in very good condition. The inside of the oval lid is hand-painted with polychrome enamel floral decoration. The movement is stamped 674. With an associated key.
