Catalogue Note
The cuvette depicts overlapping American and Brazilian flags, flanked by the names of the second and third presidents of Brazil, Peixoto and Moraes. It is dated November 15th, 1889, which marks Brazil's Proclamation of the Republic, and 1894, the date on which President Peixoto's term ended and President Moraes' term began.
The cuvette is further inscribed Mendonça, and the engraving to the back of the watch is S de M. It is very likely that these refer to Salvador de Mendonça, who served as Brazil's Consul General to the United States from 1875-1889, and was named first Ambassador after Brazil switched from the Monarchy to Republic in 1889. During his tenure, he was responsible for commerce and relations between the two nations.
