Dating back for more than 150 years, chronographs have played a vital role in Patek Philippe's horological virtuosity.  The grand era of Patek Philippe wrist chronographs started in the 1930s; after Jean and Charles Stern acquired the company from the last descendants of the manufacture's founders in 1932, they did an in-depth analysis of the American market and concluded that chronographs had a promising future.

The first to introduce this combination of functions, Patek Philippe exhibits a strong lineage of perpetual calendar chronograph watches.  The impressive range includes the Ref. 1518 in 1941, which was the first series of chronograph perpetual watches produced; to the highly coveted Ref. 2499, introduced in 1951.  In 1986, with a newly enhanced calibre CH 27-70 the Ref. 3970 was introduced with perpetual calendar and a chronograph; becoming an instant icon housing arguably the world's most beautiful chronograph movement.

According to our research, this watch is one of only four Ref. 3990 in platinum to appear in public to date. It is furthermore the second example of this series fitted with the "ardoise" or gray dial with diamond numerals.  The present watch has never been offered at auction before.
