Catalogue Note
This bust is one of a small group of surviving examples of smaller works by Orazio Marinali (Angarano 1643-Vicenza 1720). From a family of sculptors originally from Angarano, near Bassano, Orazio Marinali moved to Vicenza around 1666-67, where he founded one of the most active workshops of the time. A characteristic trademark of his work is the fusion between naturalism and classicism. This is evident in the present bust where the vibrant and naturalistically carved face is combined with the classically inspired composition. The girl's face with is pained and melancholy expression is framed by wavy hair, gathered in plaits and a bun, recalling Imperial Roman portraiture.
