This painting appears to be unlined. there is very good preservation of the paint surface and lovely detail in the objects, with only a slight thinness noticeable in the tuning pegs of the lute. there is an old repaired puncture, visible to naked eye, in botltom of lute at far right (patched on the reverse). under UV: varnish fluoresces unevenly; retouching to repaired puncture mentioned above; some other retouches to music sheet, mostly near the bottom edge; some scattered in background and a few tiny ones on lute.

Catalogue Note
The composition of this painting is comparable to two works by Jeaurat de Bertry, one in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris (signed and dated 1756) and another in the Musée de Blois.1 All show a strong diagonal line traversing the composition and a similar arrangement of musical instruments in front of a neutral background.
