Description
- Francesco Albani
- Madonna and Child with Mary Magdalene
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has an old relining. The picture appears to be fresh, but dirty, possibly from an older varnish. A cleaning test has been performed on the right foot of the Child and the paint underneath appears quite stable and intact. UV light confirms a thick milky varnish which may be rendering older retouches largely invisible. Above the varnish are a few scattered retouches; however the majority are located along the right edge and beside the lower right corner of the composition. The picture would benefit from a cleaning, which the current cleaning test indicates. In a carved giltwood frame.
