Description

- Pentecost
- signed and dated on the stone beneath Mary's foot: SBray. 1654
- oil on panel
Provenance
Acquired at a charity auction in North Carolina by the present owners and thought to have been donated by Margaret Roberts, Ashville, North Carolina.
Condition
This panel is uncradled and has been beveled on all four sides. The panel is flat and the paint layer is currently stable, although it has clearly suffered from abrasion and flaking in the past, with visible losses concentrated in the bottom left and bottom right quadrants. Under UV, a milky varnish covers the entire image. Small areas of retouch have been applied on top of this varnish, in particular, the eyes and lips of the figures have been strengthened, as have the folds of the drapery in Mary's left arm. The side of the face of the figure to the right of Mary has been retouched and there are other small, isolated spots throughout. The painting would respond well to careful restoration. In a carved and gilt wood frame with scattered small losses to the outer rim.
