Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This picture is painted on a single piece of un-reinforced oak. The paint layer is stable. There are a couple of small cracks near the top which have been retouched and there are some retouches along the grain of the panel in the sky, all of which is to be expected in pictures of this period. The details in the foreground are all beautifully preserved and the condition here is above average for works of this period.

Catalogue Note
According to H.-U. Beck, in his 1987 supplement to his catalogue of the works of van Goyen (see Literature), this painting depicts Loevenstein Castle whose walls can be seen in the middle distance. Loevenstein is located opposite the village of Woudrichem where the rivers Maas and Waal meet.
