Condition

Very good condition overall , marble finely carved. The marble with some natural inclusions and a few grey veins at several places. The surface of the face and hair slightly worn, probably due to outside exposure.

Catalogue Note

Portrait présumé de Pierre Flandrin, scientifique et père des peintres Auguste, Hippolyte et Paul Flandrin. Originaire de Montpellier, le sculpteur Jean-François Legendre-Héral fut l'élève de Joseph Chinard et de Joseph Marin, et débute au Salon de 1817. Il devient professeur à l'Ecole des Beaux Arts de Lyon, et reçoit la Légion d'honneur en 1837. Après des séjours à Rome et à Lyon, il s'installe à Paris. Parmi ses oeuvres les plus importantes, il faut mentionner sa statue de Jussieu, celle de Turgot, un buste du peintre Granet, et la composition du fronton de l'Ecole des Mines, achevée après sa mort par son élève Chambard. Lami mentionne un portrait du père Flandrin datant de 1837.
