Catalogue Note

The present lot comprises 95 documents dating from the early 17th century to the early 20th. Though mostly originating from Germany, some of the letters and documents also relate to events in neighboring European countries, and in one case to far-off California in the wake of the mid-19th century gold rush (#60). Numerous documents and letters bear witness to the impact of historic events and economic realities on the daily lives of both ordinary Jews as well as their more privileged brethren. A significant selection of documents involves members of the powerful Rothschild Dynasty as well as other important Jewish banking houses. Among the many correspondents are individuals from the circles of such historically important figures as Glückel of Hameln and Leffman Behrens.
