Anna Maria Spiazzi et al, Andrea Brustolon 1662-1732 `il Michelangelo del legno', Milan, 2009, fig. 24, illustrates a portavaso by Brustolon in Ca' Rezzonico, Venice conceived in a similar vein with cherubs supported on the back of a sea monster. Also compare the much grander sculpted Venier guéridons by the famous Venetian sculptor Andrea Brustolon (1662-1732), carved with putti, at Ca' Rezzonico, Venice (ill. by A.G.P., op. cit., Vol. I/**, pl. 737, page 348).

Condition

In overall good conserved condition. The tops are distressed and the decoration has been been lost on one. Very minor sections of the frieze have been recarved but left undecorated, for example the wings of putti and shell on the base as visible from the catalogue photograph. Overall minor, marks, chips and scratches commensurate with age and normal usage. Gilding nicely worn to red bole. Some minor chips to the carving and gilding. Beautiful detail to carving. The decoration on the bases is worn. The other table has a restored crack across the top but this has been well executed. One wing on a putto shows a glue repair which would benefit from some attention. Sections of the frieze, wings of a putto and fishtail have been recarved but left ungilded. There are construction cracks which can be left or filled.
