the body cast in relief with groups of mythological figures, one with Perseus astride Pegasus and brandishing the severed head of the Gorgon's head over the monster, Andromeda chained to a rock in the background; the other the contest of Minerva and Neptune, the detachable cover with standing figure of Victory finial, the base stamped: 'HANCOCKS' & Co. 39. BRUTON St. LONDON R 90'
Condition
Good crisp condition with attractive parcel gilding. Marks on base good; marks on border of lid a little rubbed.

Catalogue Note
Another version of this cup and cover, with different panels and figure terminal, presented to W.H. Smith, M.P. for Westminster, was exhibited by Hancocks at the International Exhibition, London, in 1871. The description of that piece, which also applies to the present example, reads: 'The highly ornamented body and handles are designed by OWEN JONES; the Medallion [sic] and [figures to the] handles are modelled by Signor MONTI.' (The Art-Journal Catalogue of the International Exhibition, 1871, p. 6)
