the tooled leather inset top on a ratchet, above four grained rosewood shelves, false book spines to the sides

Condition

Very good overall good condition. The leather is original but is rather scuffed and worn. It is nonetheless still attractive.

The present bookcase relates almost exactly to a design in the Gillows Estimate Sketch books for a bookcase made in 1831 for Ferguson & Co., the London partners, see illustration. See a similar example illustrated in Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, 2008, 2 vols., vol.I, p.382.
